A step by step guide to help you make the right choices for yourself when looking for Deutsch lessons.

If you are deciding to go back to school or trying to refresh your skills, choosing the right online Deutsch lessons to suit your needs is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.

  • What do you like to do?
Are languages one of your hobbies? Do you love German or need it for your daily or professional life? It is best to have a personal interest in one way or another before committing to paid Deutsch lessons. Maybe try out some free options before you spend your money.
  • Do your research on what course setting suits your learner type best.
Draw from your past experiences: Do you learn best on your own or in a group? Go ahead and search how you can immerse into the German language, if you are not living in a German speaking country and speak to German teachers at educational institutes that have experience and knowledge. Discuss options with other German learners, e.g. in Meet-ups, Facebook groups, in forums and blogs.
  • Know what you are getting into.
Thoroughly go through all the subjects that each of the online Deutsch lesson covers. • Compare quality of education.
Carefully select your school of choice by comparing their study facilities. If you can, opt for a free trial online German lesson before committing to a paid course. It is important to meet the teacher, who will accompany your studies. Changing teacher too often may compromise your progress. You may not find the perfect institution; however, make sure you choose one that meets the majority of your important educational needs.
  • Timeframe and duration.
With group courses the only way to be certain if you will be able to commit to studying, is knowing how long it will actually take to complete the course. Private courses are more flexible and will progress in your own speed, which means you will achieve your objectives far quicker but it may be difficult to set a timeline. If you are very busy, you can even take the option of trying to take Deutsch lessons online.
  • Getting accepted by your school of choice.
Entry requirements are the most important to consider thing as you now have to figure out if you are capable of completing. You may find that you will now have to take other courses to qualify in getting chosen for your course selection. Other options are finding other courses similar to your first choice that does not have strict entry requirements and may even have an online German teacher who could assist with getting the right things for you to get accepted.
  • How much does it cost?
The cost of quality education can run into the thousands. A rule-of-thumb: The cheaper the Deutsch lessons, the lower the teachers’ wages and ultimately their quality. Offline the VHS (Volkshochschule) is an exception because they are funded my the German state. Their teachers are paid properly, their courses are high quality, but still affordable.
Prices for online Deutsch lessons start from just a few €, but if you pay very little and the school is not accredited the teachers will most likely be unqualified.
