Taking course breaks

What if I want to take a break?

Breaks are of course possible at any time, but there are a few important points to note:

secure online scheduling

1. Expiration Date

All packages are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. Before your break, check until when your package is valid.

2. Consult with your teacher

Please let your teacher know 1-2 weeks in advance when you would like to take a break. In this way, you give your teacher the opportunity to fill these times so that they do not go away empty-handed.

3. Break length <2 weeks

Inform your teacher and book the dates for your return in advance. Your teacher can count on you, and you don’t forget to continue your German course after your holidays.

4. Break length 2+ weeks

If you take a break for more than 2 weeks or change your fixed appointments more often, it can lead to the loss of your timetable reservation. Teachers don’t earn anything if they block appointments for you and you do not book them. They must therefore accept new customers.

If you’re happy with your teacher, it pays to keep breaks to a minimum, schedule appointments ahead of time after the scheduled break, and be as regular as possible.

If this is not possible, ask your teacher about suitable dates.

5. Returning from a break

When you return please contact your teacher before booking anything, and contact admin@germanonlineinstitute.com if your teacher is no longer available.

In your email to admin write the following information:

  • desired number of lessons per week
  • your general weekly availability (the more flexible, the better your new teacher will match your content needs)
  • wishes regarding the new teacher: style, gender, expertise in specific areas, etc.
  • wishes regarding the course content: what should the focus be on?
  • your current level: where did you stop, where are you now?
  • your learning goal: Which level would you like to reach in which time frame, maybe you are planning an exam?

A suitable teacher will then contact you to continue the course seamlessly.

Alternatives to the break

Remember that a course break will get in the way of your learning goal and process and reduces your motivation. We therefore generally advise against pausing.

If you have less time to learn German, consider taking a few revision or conversational classes without homework and self-study. This way, you stay connected and even deepen your knowledge. Instead of pausing your studies, you just slow down the process.

Talk to your teacher:

e.g.

  • “I have a business trip next week, can we just talk as I won’t have a book with me?”
  • “I have a lot of stress with my children because the day care center closes during the holidays. Can we only do 1 hour instead of 3 hours?”

Your teacher will be happy to prepare something suitable for you.
